# Add a note to an item at POS

Use this process to record something about one item in the sale, such as a gift message, a request like "no ice", or a handling reminder. The note stays with that item and is copied onto the order, so it does not get mixed up with notes about the sale as a whole.

## Before you start

- Item notes must be turned on for the store. If the item detail screen has no **Note** section, ask your administrator. See [configure item notes at POS](configure-pos-item-notes).
- Your store may have renamed the section, for example to **Special instructions** or **Gift message**. The steps are the same.

## Add a note to an item

1. In the cart, select the item. The item's detail screen opens.
2. Select **Note** to expand the section.
3. Type the note. The counter shows how much of the 500-character limit you have used, and the text is saved as you type.

<!-- Screen shot: pos-item-detail-note.png. Alt: The item detail screen for a bottle of wine with the Note section expanded and a gift message typed into it, showing the character counter. -->

4. Select **Back to cart**.

The next time you open that item's detail, the **Note** section is already expanded with your text. To change the note, edit the text. To remove it, delete the text.

## Notes on a bundle

A bundle has one note for the whole bundle, entered in the **Note** section of the bundle's detail screen. Each component still has its own detail screen with its own **Note** section, so a component can carry a note of its own, such as a cooking preference on one dish in a set menu.

## Parked carts and open orders

- **Parking** keeps every item's note. When the cart is resumed, the notes are there.
- **Open orders** send notes to the store when you select **Submit**, along with the rest of the cart. When the order is resumed on any register, the notes are shown and can still be edited. Submitting again writes the change to the order, and clearing a note removes it from the order too.
- **A completed sale** copies each note onto the order at the moment the order is created. There is no way to edit it at the register afterwards.

## Where the note goes

The note is saved on the order line in Salesforce, in the **Notes** field on the **Order Product**. At the register it is visible only on the item's detail screen. It is not shown on the cart line, on the **Order placed** screen, or on the order's detail screen, and it is not printed on the receipt or a station ticket unless your administrator has added it to the template. See [configure item notes at POS](configure-pos-item-notes).

For a note about the whole sale rather than one item, use **Add notes** in the cart instead. That note is saved on the order's **Customer Notes** field and is printed on the standard receipt.

## Example

A customer buys a bottle as an anniversary gift and asks for it to be wrapped. On the bottle's detail screen, under **Note**, the operator types `Gift wrap, card to read "Happy anniversary, Sam and Priya"` and returns to the cart. After payment, the order product for that bottle carries the message in the **Notes** field, and the packer can read it there or on a receipt template that prints item notes.

After the sale, open the order in Salesforce and confirm the **Notes** field on the order product shows the text you entered.
