When tipping is on for your store, most payment methods ask for a tip straight after you select **Charge**, so the tip is collected with the payment rather than as a separate transaction. Cash works the other way around: it settles the tip first, then asks for the order and the tip together.\n\n## Before you start\n\n- Tipping must be turned on for the store, and the presets you see are set there too. See [configure tipping at POS](configure-pos-tipping).\n- The tip screen only appears on payment methods that support it: cash, card (manual), bank transfer, cheque, and pay on account. An integrated card terminal such as Tyro or Square collects the tip on the device instead, so the POS does not ask.\n- Cash asks for its tip in one of two ways, set by your administrator. Check which one your store uses before you follow the cash procedure below.\n\n## Add a tip to a card, bank, cheque, or account payment\n\n1.  At the register, add the items to the cart and select **Pay**.\n2.  Select the payment method and enter the payment as usual, such as the reference number for a manual card payment.\n3.  Select **Charge**. The **Add a tip** screen opens. Its header shows what is being paid for, either the order's memo, the customer's name, or the number of items, and the amount being paid.\n4.  Choose one of the following:\n    - A preset button, such as **20% $29.00**. Each button shows the percentage and the amount it works out to. On a small payment the buttons show fixed amounts instead, such as **$1**, **$3**, and **$5**.\n    - **No tip**, to complete the payment with nothing added.\n    - **Custom tip**, then enter the amount on the keypad and select **Confirm tip**. The button stays hidden until you enter an amount above zero.\n\n    ![Tipping options shown](https://res.cloudinary.com/hzkr6fi81/image/upload/v1792984267/media/pos-tip-screen-presets.png)\n\n5.  To go back without recording anything, select **Back**. From the custom keypad, **Back** returns to the presets. From the presets, it returns to the payment form with the payment not yet taken.\n\nThe payment is recorded with the tip included, and the sale completes. The **Order placed** screen shows a **Tip** line under the **Order total**, and the payment shows `Tip:` with the amount and `Assisted by` with the name of the staff member credited with the payment.\n\n## Add a tip to a cash payment\n\nCash settles the tip before the charge. Once a tip is chosen it joins the cart totals as a **Tip** line and the keypad asks for the order plus the tip, so the amount you record is exactly what the customer handed over.\n\n### If the register asks on request\n\nThis is the default, and it keeps a sale with no tip to the same number of taps it always took.\n\n1.  At the register, select **Pay**, then select **Cash**. The keypad opens with the amount owed already shown, so you do not have to key it.\n2.  Select **+ Tip**. The **Add a tip** screen opens.\n3.  Choose one of the following:\n    - A preset button, or **Custom tip** to enter a stated amount.\n    - **Keep the change — $35.00**, which turns the change owing into the tip in one tap. This appears only once you have keyed what the customer handed over, and the figure on it is the change that would otherwise come back.\n    - **No tip**, to return to the keypad with nothing added.\n4.  The keypad returns, now asking for the order plus the tip, and the **+ Tip** button reads the tip you chose, such as **Tip $20.00**.\n5.  Enter what the customer handed over, or leave the read-out as it is to take the tipped total exactly, and select **Charge**.\n\n### If the register asks first\n\nYour administrator can have the register ask on every cash sale instead, so the tip is never missed.\n\n1.  At the register, select **Pay**, then select **Cash**. The **Add a tip?** screen opens before the keypad.\n2.  Choose a preset, **Custom tip**, or **No tip**. To let the customer choose, select **Customer handoff** and turn the device toward them. That screen hides the rest of the checkout and cannot complete the sale, so it is safe to hand over.\n3.  The keypad opens asking for the order plus the tip. Enter what the customer handed over and select **Charge**.\n\n**Keep the change** is not offered here, because this step runs before the keypad and there is no cash on the counter yet.\n\n## Cash tips and change\n\nA tipped cash payment is taken as one full tender. The keypad asks for the order plus the tip, and what you enter is recorded as the amount tendered. For a `$145.00` order with a `$20.00` tip, the tipped total is `$165.00`:\n\n| Amount tendered | What the register records | Change |\n|---|---|---|\n| `$165.00` | Cash `$165.00`, tip `$20.00` | None |\n| `$200.00` | Cash `$200.00`, tip `$20.00` | `$35.00` |\n\nEntering less than the tipped total is refused, with **Enter at least** and the figure needed across the top of the screen. A tipped cash payment therefore cannot part-pay an order. To take part of an order in cash, take that part with **No tip** and add the tip on the payment that settles the balance.\n\nIf your store rounds cash, the rounding is worked out on the total including the tip, so the change matches the cash denominations. See [configure cash rounding](configure-cash-rounding).\n\n## Tips on a split bill\n\nTipping is per payment. When an order is paid in more than one payment, each eligible payment asks for its own tip, and the presets are a percentage of that payment, not of the whole order. Two customers splitting a `$145.00` bill are each asked to tip on their `$72.50`, and each tip is credited to whoever took that payment. See [split payment at POS](split-payments).\n\n## When no tip screen appears\n\n| Situation | Why |\n|---|---|\n| The payment is on Tyro, Square, Linkly, Quest Airpay TAP, Latitude, or a Vii gift card | Integrated terminals collect the tip on the device, and other card terminals charge before a tip could be added. A tip taken on a Tyro or Square terminal is still added to the order as a **Tip** line and credited to whoever took the payment, even when tipping is off for the store. |\n| The payment is a voucher or account credit | These have a fixed balance, so no tip can be added on top. |\n| The payment is Pay by link | The customer pays later, away from the register. |\n| The payment is a deposit, with the rest of the order owed later | A tip is collected on the payment that settles what is due, not on the deposit. A split payment that covers the full amount is not a deposit. |\n| You are refunding | A tip is never refunded and never added to a refund. |\n| The tip screen has stopped appearing for one method | Your administrator has turned tipping off for that method. See [configure tipping at POS](configure-pos-tipping). |\n\n## Tips and refunds\n\nRefunding a payment returns the sale amount only. The tip stays on the order and does not appear in the items you can select for return. See [returns, refunds, and exchanges at POS](returns-refund-exchange-at-pos).\n\nTo review a tip after the sale, open the order from the **Orders** list. The order shows the **Tip** line and, under each payment, the tip it carried and who took it. See [find a past order](order-history)."}
