# Enable customers to pay a deposit at checkout

You can allow customers to put down a deposit at checkout. This works for businesses such as a furniture retailer, who may accept a deposit against a made-to-order sofa. The customer enters an amount into an **Amount to pay now** field at the payment step. The card is charged that amount, and the order is created with the rest owing.

You turn the checkout deposit on for the whole store, and the customer chooses the amount. A per-product deposit is different: you set the amount and attach it to a product. The two cannot be used together, so read [accept deposits for purchases](deposits) before you choose.

## Choose which kind of deposit you need

| Use the checkout deposit when | Use a per-product deposit when |
|---|---|
| The customer chooses how much to pay now | You set a fixed amount per product or across the store |
| Any order can be part-paid | Only some products require a deposit |

If any item in the cart requires a per-product deposit, the **Amount to pay now** field does not appear, even when the checkout deposit is turned on.

## Before you start

- Plan how you will collect the balance. The amount owing is shown on the order, and you can collect it with a [payment link](salesforce-order-payment-link).
- Check which products have **Require Deposit** checked. Customers cannot pay a checkout deposit on a cart that contains any of them.

## Turn on the checkout deposit

1.  Open the **Store** record.
2.  Go to **Store Variables**.
3. Create a store variable with **Key** set to `checkout.deposit.enabled` and **Value** set to `true`.
4.  Save the record.

The **Amount to pay now** field now appears on the payment step of checkout. The shipped theme already renders it, so no theme change is needed. If your store uses a customized payment step, add `{% component "checkout/deposit" %}` to that template.

## Set a suggested minimum

Do this when you want customers to leave a minimum deposit. Skip it if any amount is acceptable.

1. Open the **Store** record and go to **Store Variables**.
2. Create a store variable with **Key** set to `checkout.deposit.minimum_percentage` and **Value** set to the percentage as a plain number, such as `20` for 20%.
3.  Save the record.

The field now shows "Minimum deposit [x]". If a customer enters less than the minimum, the amount is raised to the minimum with the message "Adjusted to the minimum deposit of [x]".

:::note
The minimum is not checked when the payment is processed. A payment below it is accepted.
:::

## Items that must always be paid in full

Some items cannot be part-paid, because the customer receives their full value as soon as the payment succeeds. Examples include:

- Digital goods that are delivered on payment.
- Vouchers and gift cards, which are issued for their full value.
- Subscriptions that are charged at checkout. A subscription that is not charged at checkout can still be part-paid.

The customer must pay at least the total of these items. The field shows whichever minimum is higher: that total, or your minimum percentage. Unlike the percentage, this minimum is enforced. A lower payment is refused with the message "Some items in your order must be paid in full. The minimum payment is [x]."

If every item in the cart must be paid in full, the field does not appear.

## Purchase adjustments clear the deposit field automatically

The deposit amount is cleared on the checkout if:

- A coupon or a removed item brings the total below the deposit.
- The customer adds an item that must be paid in full, which raises the minimum above the deposit.
- The customer adds a product that requires a per-product deposit, which switches the order to that kind of deposit.

The customer then sees the new minimum and enters a new amount.

## How points, account credit, and vouchers affect the deposit

- Points are always paid in full. The deposit applies only to the part of the order paid in currency, so the field does not appear when a cart is paid entirely in points.
- Account credit and vouchers are applied first. The deposit is part of the amount that remains.

## After the order is placed

The order shows the amount paid and the balance owing. To collect the balance, send the customer a payment link. If part of the deposit is still unpaid, the amount due on the link is the rest of the deposit. Once the deposit is paid, the amount due is the remaining balance.

:::warning
If you turn the checkout deposit off, orders already placed are not affected. Carts that have not been paid yet are charged the full total at checkout, even if the customer has entered a deposit.
:::

## Check it worked

Add a physical product to a cart on your storefront and go to the payment step. The **Amount to pay now** field is empty, with the full total shown as placeholder text. Enter a smaller amount, complete the payment, and confirm the order shows the smaller amount paid and the rest owing.
