Turn it on when the note belongs to a particular line rather than to the whole order.\n\nItem notes are off unless you turn them on. Everything below is set with store variables on the **Store** record (s_c__Store_Variable__c), so no code change is involved.\n\n## Before you start\n\n- You need edit access to the **Store** record and the **Store Variables** related list.\n- POS reads store variables on the next store sync, so plan the change for a quiet period. See [manage POS data sync](manage-pos-data-sync).\n\n## Turn on item notes\n\n1.  Open the **Store** record and go to the **Store Variables** related list.\n2.  Click **New**.\n3.  Enter a **Name** that makes sense to your organization, such as `POS item notes`.\n4.  Enter `pos.cart_item_notes.enabled` in **Key**. Keys are case sensitive.\n5.  Enter `true` in **Value**. Any other value leaves the feature off.\n6.  Save the record.\n7.  Sync the register, or wait for the next store sync.\n\nAt the register, the detail screen of every cart item now has a **Note** section with a text box and a character counter, alongside **Adjust Price**, the fulfillment type, and **Pay now**.\n\n## Rename the field\n\nThe section is headed **Note** unless you give it your own label.\n\n1.  Add a second store variable with the **Key** `pos.cart_item_notes.label`.\n2.  Set **Value** to the label you want, such as `Special instructions`.\n3.  Save, then sync the register.\n\nThe new label replaces **Note** on every item detail screen and on the bundle detail screen.\n\n## Where the note is stored\n\n| Stage | Where the note lives |\n|---|---|\n| While the item is in the cart | **Notes** on the **Cart Item** (s_c__Cart_Item__c.s_c__Notes__c) |\n| Once the order is created | **Notes** on the **Order Product** (OrderItem.s_c__Notes__c), copied from the cart item |\n| On an open order that is resumed and edited | Both records are updated together, and clearing the note clears both |\n\nBoth fields are long text areas. The register caps a note at 500 characters.\n\nThe package does not add either field to a page layout. To see notes in Salesforce, add **Notes** to the **Order Product** page layout, and to the **Cart Item** layout if you review carts.\n\n## Where the note appears\n\nThe note is shown only on the item's detail screen at the register. It is not shown on the cart line itself, on the **Order placed** screen, or on the order detail screen, and the shipped receipt and station ticket templates do not print it. To put a note in front of a kitchen or a packer, add it to the template that device prints.\n\nBoth drops expose the note as `notes`.\n\n- On a receipt template, inside the loop over `current_order.items`, add a row after the item's price row:\n\n\n```\n{%- if item.notes != blank %}\nrow=[\"  {{ item.notes }}\", \"\", \"\"]\n{%- endif %}\n```\n\n\n- On a station ticket (fulfillment) template, `current_items` holds fulfillment items, so reach the order item first:\n\n\n```\n{% assign order_item = item.order_item %}\n{% if order_item.notes != blank %}{{ order_item.notes }}{% endif %}\n```\n\n\nSee [POS receipt template](pos-receipt-template) and [POS print templates](pos-print-templates).\n\n## Item notes or order notes\n\n| | Order notes | Item notes |\n|---|---|---|\n| Where the operator enters it | **Add notes** in the cart or at checkout | The **Note** section on one item's detail screen |\n| Applies to | The whole sale | One line, or one bundle |\n| Stored on | **Customer Notes** on the **Order** (Order.s_c__Customer_Notes_Long__c) | **Notes** on each **Order Product** |\n| Label variable | `pos.notes.label` | `pos.cart_item_notes.label` |\n| Always available | Yes | Only when `pos.cart_item_notes.enabled` is `true` |\n| Printed by the shipped receipt template | Yes | No |\n\n## Example\n\nA cellar door sells gift bottles and wants staff to record the message for each one under a label that says what it is for.\n\n| Name | Key | Value |\n|---|---|---|\n| POS item notes | `pos.cart_item_notes.enabled` | `true` |\n| Item note label | `pos.cart_item_notes.label` | `Gift message` |\n\nOnce the store has synced, add an item at the register and open its detail screen. A **Gift message** section appears with a `0 / 500` counter, and after a sale the text you enter is on the order product's **Notes** field in Salesforce."}
