# Customer and account objects

Customers use the two standard Salesforce objects, not custom ones, and
everything StoreConnect adds hangs off them. Use this article to find the object
you need before you query customer data.

## Account and contact, and which is which

An [Account](account-object-reference) is the organization or household. A
[Contact](contact-object-reference) is a person, and it is the record a storefront
shopper signs in as.

This matters more in StoreConnect than in a plain Salesforce org, because
**Account** is reused for several roles beyond customers. The same object holds
suppliers, and brands are accounts with a flag set. So filtering customers means
filtering on the fields that say what kind of account it is, not just querying
every account.

Both records are also reused on the storefront under different names: **Account**
is rendered by three Liquid objects, one of which is **Brand**. Each object
reference names them in its **On the storefront** section.

## Entitlements are records, not flags

What a customer is allowed to do, or has been given, is stored as separate
records rather than checkboxes. That is what makes the balances auditable.

- **Credit.** [Account Credit](account-credit-object-reference) holds a balance,
  and every movement is an
  [Account Credit Ledger](account-credit-ledger-object-reference) entry. The
balance is the sum of the ledger, so never edit it as a figure.
- **Points.** [Account Points Ledger](account-points-ledger-object-reference)
works the same way for loyalty points.
- **Membership.** A [Membership](membership-object-reference) grants access, and
  gates content through
  [Membership Page](membership-page-object-reference) and
  [Membership Article](membership-article-object-reference).
- **Approvals.** Restricted products need
  [Permitted Restricted Product](permitted-restricted-product-object-reference)
  for the account, listing approved
  [items](permitted-restricted-item-object-reference).
- **Scoped catalogs.**
  [Account Product Category](account-product-category-object-reference) limits an
account to particular categories, so different customers see different catalogs.

## Where it meets other domains

- **Orders and checkout.** Orders belong to an account and a contact, and credit
and vouchers are spent through payments. See
  [order and checkout objects](order-and-checkout-objects).
- **Catalog.** Account pricing runs through a
[price book](pricebook2-object-reference), and scoped catalogs through account
  categories. See [catalog objects](catalog-objects).
- **Store design.** Memberships gate pages and articles. See
  [store design objects](store-design-objects).
- **Point of sale.** POS operators are [users](user-object-reference) granted
access per outlet. See [POS objects](pos-objects).
