A card payment goes straight to the terminal, and a cash payment opens the cash screen with the amount owed already filled in. You can still use **Checkout**, beside **Charge**, for when the customer wants to pay another way or split the payment.\n\n**Charge** appears only when the sale has an amount to take, nothing has been paid on it yet, and the register's default payment method is cash or an integrated card terminal. Otherwise the cart shows the normal **Pay** button, which opens the checkout page. The **Pay** button always appears on a refund, on a sale that already has a part payment, and on a register whose default method is one that needs details entered, such as Card (manual) or a voucher. The default method depends on how your store is set up. See [Configure fast checkout at POS](configure-pos-fast-checkout).\n\nFast checkout always takes the full amount owed now, which is the amount shown on **Charge**. On a sale with a [deposit](deposits) on an item, that is the deposit rather than the order total, and the balance is collected later through **Checkout**. To take part of the amount owed now, use **Checkout**. See [Split payments](split-payments).\n\n## Take a fast checkout card payment\n\n1.  Build the sale in the cart.\n2.  Select **Charge**.\n3.  Hand the terminal to the customer.\n\nThe amount goes to the terminal as the payment opens, so you land straight on the waiting screen, showing the amount being charged under an animated contactless mark. The customer taps their card and the sale completes.\n\n## Take a fast checkout cash payment\n\nCash asks what the customer handed over rather than charging on your behalf, because a single tap would record the money and open the drawer with nothing to undo it.\n\n1.  Build the sale in the cart.\n2.  Select **Charge**. The cash tender screen opens with the amount owed already shown.\n3.  Record what the customer handed over:\n    - For the exact amount, select **Charge** without keying anything.\n    - For any other amount, key it in. The first digit replaces the amount shown rather than adding to it.\n4.  Give any change shown, and close the drawer.\n\nChange due appears once the payment goes through.\n\nIf your store shows suggested amounts, the screen leads with them instead, and a common cash sale is one tap. See [Use the suggested cash amounts](#use-the-suggested-cash-amounts).\n\n:::note\nAn entry that cannot be taken is called out across the top of the screen. `Invalid amount` means an amount of zero or less. `Enter at least` with a figure means the screen takes the full amount only, and what you keyed is short of it.\n:::\n\n## Use the suggested cash amounts\n\nWhere the store shows them, the cash screen offers the amounts a customer is likely to hand over, worked out from what is owed.\n\n1.  Select **Charge** in the cart.\n2.  Select the amount the customer handed over. Each amount above the total says what comes back, for example `$1.60 change`.\n3.  Give the change and close the drawer.\n\nSelecting an amount takes the payment in that tap, with no separate confirmation.\n\n**Exact amount** takes what is owed. For anything not offered, select **Custom amount** to reveal the keypad, or use the keypad already beside the suggestions, depending on how your store is set up. Once you ask for the keypad, the suggestions do not come back for that payment. Where the keypad is always on screen, **Reset** clears what you have keyed and brings the suggestions back.\n\nOn a sale that is only part-paid now, such as a deposit, an overpayment settles more of the order rather than coming back as change, and the amount reads `No change`.\n\n## Add a tip\n\nWhere tipping is on for cash, the cash screen shows a **+ Tip** button beside the amount. Tap it to add a tip before taking the cash. If your store asks for the tip first, the tip screen appears before the cash screen instead. Either way, the amount owed then includes the tip, and the suggested amounts answer the tipped total. The tender you record is exactly what the customer handed over.\n\n## Back out of a payment\n\nEvery screen on the fast path has a button in its corner, and tapping outside the screen does nothing, so a stray tap cannot abandon a payment in progress.\n\n- Before anything is recorded, **Cancel** closes the payment and returns you to the cart, with the sale still in it.\n- Once the order has reached the server, the button reads **Continue in checkout** and moves the sale to the full checkout page, where you can complete it, park it, or save and exit."}
