# Omnichannel fulfillment models (BOPIS, BOSFS, BORIS, ROPIS)

Use this to match common retail fulfillment industry terms to the StoreConnect feature that implements each one.

## Supported models

| Industry term | Full name | What it means | StoreConnect feature |

| BOPIS | Buy Online, Pickup In Store | A customer orders and pays online, then collects the item at a physical location. | [Click and Collect](setting-up-click-and-collect) |
| BOSFS (also BODFS) | Buy Online, Ship From Store (or Deliver From Store) | An online order ships from a retail store's own stock rather than a central warehouse. | Every [Shipment](shipment-object-reference) is scoped to a [stock location](stock-locations); which location fulfills a given order is a decision you make in your own Salesforce processes. | BORIS | Buy Online, Return In Store | A customer returns an item purchased online at a physical location instead of shipping it back. | The standard POS return process, which looks up an order by order history or customer lookup regardless of the channel or location that created it. ## Shipping an online order from a specific stock location

Enabling BOSFS is a two-part decision:

1.  **The data model supports it out of the box.** Every Shipment record has a required Stock Location field, so any order can be fulfilled from any store's stock, not only a central warehouse.
2.  **You decide how the location gets chosen.** StoreConnect does not include a built-in setting that automatically picks a fulfilling location:
    -   A manual step where a warehouse or store team assigns the Shipment's Stock Location during pick and pack.
    -   A Salesforce Flow or Apex automation that assigns it based on your own rules, for example current Stock Level records across locations.

## Beyond retail

These are retail terms, but the underlying models apply to any StoreConnect store selling physical goods or bookable items, including higher education and nonprofit organizations. There is no separate industry-specific terminology for these sectors — the same BOPIS, BORIS, and ROPIS terms apply, only the item being collected or returned changes:

|---|---|---|
| BOPIS | A student reserves a loaner laptop or course textbook online and collects it at the library or IT desk. | A beneficiary selects items from a food pantry's online list and collects the packed order at a distribution site. |
| BORIS | A student returns a university-issued device to the IT help desk. | A client exchanges a clothing item at a community closet location. |
| ROPIS | A student reserves lab equipment or a study room online without paying, then confirms and collects it in person. | A donor reserves an in-person event seat or gift online, confirmed at check-in. |

## Terms

**BOPIS, BOSFS, BORIS, and ROPIS** are industry-standard terms used across retail and ecommerce, not StoreConnect-specific naming. StoreConnect's own object and field names (Click and Collect, Stock Location, Special Order) predate and don't use these acronyms directly, which is why they're mapped here rather than appearing in the underlying configuration screens.

**Split fulfillment**, unlike the four terms above, is not an established retail industry acronym. It's used in this documentation as a plain description of mixing fulfillment methods within a single order, and is distinct from a Split Shipment (see the [Glossary](glossary)), where every item ships but across multiple separate parcels.
