Both modes take the register to the PIN entry screen, requiring staff to re-authenticate before continuing.\n\nBoth settings are configured as store variables in Salesforce. They are independent and can be used together.\n\nWhen the register locks, any in-progress cart is preserved. Staff simply enter their PIN to unlock and continue from where they left off.\n\n## Inactivity timeout\n\nThe register locks automatically after a set number of minutes with no user interaction. This is useful for shared terminals where a staff member may walk away mid-shift.\n\n### Configure inactivity timeout\n\n1. In Salesforce, go to **StoreConnect** and open your store.\n2. Go to the **Store Variables** related list and click **New**.\n3. Set the following values:\n\n| Field | Value |\n|-------|-------|\n| **Key** | `pos.settings.lock.inactivity_timeout_minutes` |\n| **Value** | The number of minutes before locking (for example, `15`) |\n\n4. Save the store variable record.\n\nThe change takes effect after the next POS sync. No restart is required.\n\nTo disable inactivity timeout, delete the store variable record or leave the value blank.\n\n## Device lock (native app only)\n\nThe register locks when the device's screen locks — for example, when a staff member presses the power button or the device auto-locks due to its own screen timeout. This setting only works in the native POS app. It has no effect in a browser-based POS session.\n\n### Configure device lock\n\n1. In Salesforce, go to **StoreConnect** and open your store.\n2. Go to the **Store Variables** related list and click **New**.\n3. Set the following values:\n\n| Field | Value |\n|-------|-------|\n| **Key** | `pos.settings.lock.on_device_lock` |\n| **Value** | `true` |\n\n4. Save the store variable record.\n\nThe change takes effect after the next POS sync. No restart is required.\n\nTo disable device lock, set the value to `false` or delete the store variable record.\n\n:::note\nThis setting applies at the store level. All outlets and registers within the store share the same configuration.\n:::\n\n## Manually locking the register\n\nStaff can lock the register at any time using the **Lock** button in the sidebar settings area, without waiting for the auto-lock timer. See [Navigate the POS dashboard](navigate-the-pos-dashboard).\n\n## Unlocking the register\n\nWhen the register is locked — whether by auto-lock or manually — staff see the PIN entry screen. Enter a valid PIN to unlock. See [Sign in to a POS register](pos-register-sign-in)."}
