Exclude products from price reductions
On this page
You can prevent automatic discounts or promotion codes from applying to specific products by setting the Exclude From Price Reductions field. This is useful when certain products, such as gift cards, clearance items, or products already on a fixed price, should never be further discounted.
How it works
The Exclude From Price Reductions field is a multi-select picklist available on both Product and Price Book Entry records. You can select one or more of the following exclusion types:
| Value | Effect | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Discounts | Automatic discounts do not apply to this product | Web and POS |
| Promotions | Standard promotions and Promotions v2 do not apply to this product, and it counts toward no Promotion v2 condition. A Promotion v2 Free Product reward that names it still adds it free | Web and POS |
| Manual | Staff cannot adjust this product’s price at the register | POS only |
When a product is excluded, StoreConnect skips it when evaluating that kind of price reduction. The exclusion applies at line-item level, so other products in the same order can still be reduced.
:::note A product excluded from Promotions is left out of every Promotion v2: it takes no reward, does not count toward a spend or quantity threshold, and adds nothing to the subtotal a subtotal reward is sized on. A cart of $40 of excluded items and $70 of other items counts as $70 against a “spend $100” condition. A Free Product reward that names the product still adds it free. To keep a product out of one Promotion v2 only, add a Promotion v2 Product Scope with Scope Type set to Exclude on that promotion’s condition or reward instead. :::
Product and price book entry settings
Exclusions can be set at two levels, with the more specific level taking precedence:
| Setting | Takes precedence |
|---|---|
| Price Book Entry has a value set | Uses the Price Book Entry exclusions |
| Price Book Entry is blank | Inherits exclusions from the Product |
This lets you apply a blanket exclusion at the product level while overriding it for specific price books. For example, you might exclude a product from discounts globally, but allow discounts when it appears in a wholesale price book.
Configure exclusions on a product
- Open the Product record.
- Find the Exclude From Price Reductions field.
- Select the exclusion types to apply: Discounts, Promotions, or both.
- Save the record.
All price book entries for this product inherit these exclusions unless the price book entry has its own value set.
Configure exclusions on a price book entry
- Open the Price Book Entry record (found on the Price Book or via the Product’s price book entries related list).
- Find the Exclude From Price Reductions field.
- Select the exclusion types to apply, or leave blank to inherit from the product.
- Save the record.
:::tip To allow a specific price book entry to receive discounts even when the product is excluded, set the Price Book Entry field to an empty selection. A blank Price Book Entry field means “inherit from product”, so if the product is excluded, so is the entry. :::
Examples
Exclude a product from all discounts and promotions:
On the Product record, set Exclude From Price Reductions to Discounts; Promotions.
Exclude gift cards from promotions only:
On the gift card Product record, set Exclude From Price Reductions to Promotions. This keeps the gift card out of promo codes and automatic Promotions v2 alike. Automatic Discount records can still apply.
Exclude a product from discounts and promotions, but allow promotions only in a wholesale price book:
On the Product record, set Exclude From Price Reductions to Discounts; Promotions. Then open the Price Book Entry in the wholesale price book and set Exclude From Price Reductions to Discounts only. The price book entry value overrides the product, so promotions are allowed for that entry.
You can combine values. Setting Discounts; Promotions; Manual excludes a product from all three types of price reduction.
POS behavior
Exclusions set on a product or price book entry are enforced in POS in these additional ways:
Manual exclusion: - The Adjust Price accordion is not shown for cart items excluded from manual price reductions. Staff cannot apply a manual price override to these items. - Excluded items are skipped when distributing a cart-level discount. If a staff member enters a percentage or fixed discount for the whole cart, the discount is calculated against the eligible subtotal (the items that are not excluded) and distributed only across those items. Excluded items receive $0.00 from the distribution. - When a cart contains items that cannot receive manual discounts, POS displays a note indicating that some items are not eligible.
Discounts exclusion: - Automatic discounts from the Discounts object are not applied to the product, both during price lookup and when evaluating POS discount rules.
Promotions exclusion: - The item takes no Promotion v2 discount at the register and counts toward no promotion’s condition, the same as on the web. A Free Product reward that names the item still adds it free. See How Promotions v2 run at the register.
:::tip
To let staff see the price of an item but not adjust it, set Manual on the product. Setting Discounts; Promotions; Manual covers every reduction this field controls, including Promotions v2.
