Redirect behavior and the default store

Set one store as the default when you run several stores on a shared domain. StoreConnect uses the default store to break ties in routing, and as the store it falls back to when a request has no store of its own. If you only run one store, you do not need to change this.

The root path is your domain with nothing after it, for example https://shop.example.com/, as opposed to https://shop.example.com/eu. A store with a blank Path serves the root path whether or not it is the default. Default only decides the root path when more than one store on the domain has a blank Path, or when every store on the domain has a Path.

Only one store in your org is the default at a time. Selecting Default on a second store transfers the setting: StoreConnect clears the Default checkbox on the store that held it before.

Set the default store

1. Open the Store record you want to make the default.
2. Select the Default checkbox.
3. Click Save.
4. If your stores share a domain and all of them have a Path, visit the root path and confirm you land on this store.

:::warning Selecting Default on a store clears it on whichever store held it before, and nothing tells you that it happened. Check which store is the default before you change it. Single sign-on callbacks that are not tied to a store fall back to the default store, so moving the setting to a test store sends those logins there. :::

How the default store behaves

Geolocation redirects

The geolocation service only redirects users to a more appropriate regional store if they’re currently on the default store (or a store with no path). This prevents redirect loops when a user is already on a non-default store like /eu or /us. See the geolocation feature.

OAuth/SSO fallback

When an OAuth callback occurs outside a store context, the system falls back to the default to set the current store. See authentication providers.

Multi-store domain setup

In a typical multi-store setup on a shared domain, one store has the Default checkbox selected and a blank Path, while the others are not default and have a Path each. The store with the blank Path serves the root path, and it is the one users land on before a geolocation redirect sends them to a regional store.
