Resume a sale at another register

On this page

A sale that was started on one register but not paid for can be picked up on another. This is useful when a customer moves to a different counter, when a register runs out of battery mid-sale, or when one person starts an order and a colleague finishes it.

A sale is saved to the store as it is built, not to the register it was started on, so nothing has to be done to it first. Any register signed in to the same store can pick it up, including a register at a different outlet. Sales never cross stores.

Find the sale

Unfinished sales sit in one of two lists, depending on how far the sale got.

Where to look What you will find
Carts in the sidebar Sales that never reached checkout
Orders, filtered by Type: Parked Sales parked as an order

Both lists cover every register in the store, not only the one you are standing at.

Resume from the Carts list

  1. Open Carts in the sidebar menu. The icon is a bag.
  2. Select the sale you want to pick up.
  3. Select Resume cart.

The sale becomes the active cart on your register, with its items and customer intact. Any cart you already had open stays in the Carts list rather than being discarded.

The Carts list holds every unfinished cart on the store, including carts customers have left on your website. Set the Source filter to POS to narrow it to sales started at a register.

Carts is part of the POS sidebar menu that ships by default, so it is there unless someone has changed it. A store that has built its own sidebar menu gets exactly the items that menu defines, and Carts may have been renamed or left out. See POS action groups for how the sidebar is assembled. The Orders route below works either way.

Resume from the Orders list

  1. Open the Orders list.
  2. Filter by Type: Parked.
  3. Open the order and resume it.

See Park an order for the full parking process.

Only one register at a time

While a register has a sale open, that sale is locked to it. Another register that tries to open the same sale is refused, so two people cannot edit one sale and overwrite each other.

The lock is released when the register clears the sale from its screen, finishes it, or disconnects. It also expires on its own if a register goes offline holding a sale, so a register that loses power mid-sale does not strand it.

Resuming a second sale does not release the first one. A register that picks up another sale while it is already holding one keeps its hold on both, and that hold lasts for as long as the register stays online rather than clearing after a few minutes.

A register that tries to open a held sale shows a banner saying the sale is open on another register, and names that register when it knows it. To free the sale, go to the register named on the banner and either clear that sale from its screen or sign out of POS, which releases every sale that register is holding.

Clear the current sale from your register before picking up another, so nothing is left held behind you.

:::note If you work across more than one outlet, expect a short delay. Registers at other outlets are not notified the moment a sale is picked up, and may keep showing it as available until their next sync. The lock still holds: the second register is refused when it tries to open the sale. The result is a refusal that arrives late, not two people editing the same sale. :::

Sales resumed on a later day

A sale resumed on a later day keeps the prices it was saved with, the same as one resumed the same day. Tax is the part that is recalculated: the tax worked out when the sale was last saved is reused only on the same day, so a sale picked up later has its tax calculated again from your current settings. Confirm the total with the customer before taking payment on a sale that has been sitting since a previous day.

What you cannot resume

  • A sale while your register is offline. Before handing a sale over, the register checks with StoreConnect that no other device has started its checkout. If it cannot reach StoreConnect it refuses, rather than risk two registers taking payment for the same sale. Reconnect the register and try again.
  • A sale another register is still holding, even after it has moved on to a different sale. The banner names the register holding it. Ask the person there to clear it from their register or sign out.
  • A sale at another store. Sales are visible only to registers signed in to the same store.
  • A sale already being checked out elsewhere. If another register has taken payment against the sale, it cannot be picked up as a cart. Find it in the Orders list instead.
