Quest Airpay TAP
On this page
Quest Airpay TAP takes card payments and refunds at the StoreConnect POS with tap to pay. The POS hands each transaction to the Quest Airpay TAP companion app on the same device, and the customer taps their card to pay.
You set it up once for the store and once on each device. After that, staff select it at checkout like any other payment method.
Supported features
These features work with Quest Airpay TAP:
- POS card payments (tap to pay)
- Full and partial payments
- Refunds
- Checking a payment interrupted by the POS app closing or restarting, without charging the customer twice
Before you start
- You have a Quest Airpay TAP account and the username and password Quest gave you.
- The Quest Airpay TAP companion app is installed on each device that takes Quest payments.
- Each of those devices runs the POS in the StoreConnect native mobile app. Quest Airpay TAP does not appear when the POS runs in a browser.

Field Value Key pos.payment_options.quest_airpay_tap.enabledValue true - Select Save.
Set up on each device
Set up Quest Airpay TAP on every device that takes Quest payments. You only do this once per device.
- Install the Quest Airpay TAP companion app on the device.
- Open the StoreConnect POS and go to Settings > Payment integrations.
- Tap Quest Airpay TAP.
- Tap Setup Quest Airpay TAP. The POS fetches the Quest credentials from StoreConnect and starts the companion app.
Setup status changes from Incomplete to Complete, and Card (Quest Airpay TAP) appears as a payment method at checkout on that device.
Reconnect
After setup, the Quest Airpay TAP settings page shows a Reconnect button in place of the setup button. Tap it to sign in to Quest again without repeating the setup, for example when the Quest session has expired.
Tools menu
After setup, the same page also shows a Tools menu button. Tap it to open the Quest advanced menu in the companion app.
Take a payment via Quest Airpay TAP
- Add items to the cart and go to checkout.
- Select Card (Quest Airpay TAP).
- Tap Continue to charge the full amount due. To charge part of it, tap Take custom amount and enter the amount.
- When the companion app prompts, the customer taps their card.
When Quest approves the payment, it is added to the sale. If it covers the amount due, the order completes. If it does not, the rest stays owing for another payment. If the card is declined or the transaction fails, the POS shows the reason and a Try again button.
Process a refund via Quest Airpay TAP
Quest Airpay TAP is offered as a refund method for a payment that was taken with Quest Airpay TAP, up to the amount of that payment.
- Open the original order and start a return.
- Select Quest Airpay TAP as the refund method.
- Enter the refund amount and tap Process refund.
- When the companion app prompts, the customer taps their card.
When Quest approves the refund, it is recorded against the original order.
If a payment is interrupted
If the POS app closes or restarts while a Quest payment is in progress, the device keeps a note of that payment. The next time checkout opens on the device, the POS asks the Quest companion app what happened to it before you can take any payment. The same check runs if you tap Continue while the note is still there. The check covers the payment however long ago it started, and whatever the cart now owes.
While a payment is waiting to be checked, the cart offers the full checkout in place of Fast Checkout, so the check runs where you can see the result.
- On the device that took the payment, open the cart the payment was for.
- Go to checkout. The POS shows Checking an earlier Quest payment with the amount and the POS reference, for example Checking an earlier Quest payment of $40.00 (Ref 7K2M9Q4XB1PZ).
- Wait for Quest to answer, then act on what the POS shows.
| The POS shows | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The earlier Quest payment of $40.00 went through | Quest approved the payment. | Select Close. The POS adds the payment to the sale without charging the card again. |
| Earlier Quest payment declined, with the reason | The bank declined the card. No payment was taken. | Select Close, then take the payment again. |
| Earlier Quest payment failed, with the reason | The payment did not go through. No payment was taken. | Select Close, then take the payment again. |
| The screen closes by itself | Quest has no record of the payment, so the customer was not charged. | Take the payment as normal. If you tapped Continue, the new payment has already started. |
| The earlier Quest payment of $40.00 (Ref 7K2M9Q4XB1PZ) may have gone through, with the reason | Quest could not confirm the result, for example Failed to fetch Quest credentials. |
Check with Quest whether the card was charged, using the reference, before you take the payment again. Selecting Close ends the check, and the POS does not check this payment again. |
An older version of the Quest companion app does not report a missing payment, so a payment Quest has no record of shows may have gone through instead of the screen closing by itself.
A payment that went through is added at the amount Quest approved, even if the cart has changed since. If that is less than the sale now owes, the rest stays owing for another payment. If it is more, refund the difference to the customer. If the order then fails to save, tap Continue again: the POS resubmits the recovered payment rather than charging the card a second time.
For example, the POS app restarts while a customer taps their card for $40.00. The sales assistant reopens the POS on the same device, opens the cart, and goes to checkout. The POS shows The earlier Quest payment of $40.00 went through. The sales assistant selects Close, and the sale completes with a $40.00 Quest payment.
Cancel the check
While the POS is waiting for Quest, the screen warns that the payment will not be checked again and may already have been charged.
- Select Cancel recovery.
- Check with Quest whether the card was charged before you take the payment again.
The POS stops waiting, but Quest still finishes the check. A Quest payment or refund you start before Quest answers shows Waiting for the earlier Quest check to finish, then starts once Quest answers. An answer that arrives after you cancel is not added to the sale, so if the earlier payment went through and you took the payment again, refund the second charge.
If the sale is no longer on the register
The POS checks an earlier payment only from the sale it was taken for. If checkout opens on a different cart while a payment is waiting to be checked, the POS shows may have gone through with the message “Transaction recovery failed: the pending payment belongs to another sale” and the reference. Selecting Close discards the earlier payment, and the POS does not check it again. To avoid this, open the original cart first after an interruption.
If the earlier payment is discarded this way, check with Quest whether the card was charged before you take the payment again.
Refunds
Refunds are not checked this way. If the POS app closes or restarts during a Quest refund, check with Quest whether the refund went through before you process it again, so the customer is not refunded twice.
