Customer address book
On this page
A signed-in customer can keep a list of addresses and choose between them at checkout instead of retyping one each time. This is useful for any shopper, and particularly for a business account that delivers to several sites.
There is nothing to turn on. The address book is available to every signed-in customer. A customer who has saved no addresses checks out with the account address.
What a customer can do
- Add any number of addresses from the Address book page of their account.
- Give each one an optional label, such as
HomeorWarehouse. Without a label, the entry is named after a one-line summary of the address. - Click Make default shipping or Make default billing on an entry. The same address can be both.
- Pick an entry under Saved addresses at checkout, which fills in the address fields.
- Choose Enter a new address at checkout and select Save this address to my address book.
If a customer picks a saved address at checkout and then edits a field, the checkout treats the values as a new address. The saved entry stays unchanged.
Each contact keeps their own list
The address book belongs to the contact, not the account. Two contacts on one business account keep separate lists and cannot see or change each other’s entries.
On a support call, an address one person cannot find may be on a colleague’s contact record rather than missing.
The account address still applies
The Account record has one shipping address and one billing address, shared by every contact on the account. The account address applies whenever a customer has no address book default of that type.
Setting an address book entry as a default does not change the address fields on the Account record. Salesforce reporting, tax and the payment gateways still read the account fields, so expect the two to differ over time.
What happens when an address is deleted
When a customer deletes their default entry, their oldest remaining entry becomes the new default. Once the last entry is deleted, the account address applies again.
:::note This only happens when the customer deletes the entry from their account. If someone deletes the entry in Salesforce, no replacement default is set, and the customer gets the account address even if they have other saved entries. This lasts until the customer sets a new default. :::
Limits
- The point of sale does not read the address book. It is available on the website only.
- The checkout pre-fills from the cart first. When the cart has no address, the checkout pre-fills the customer’s default entry, or the account address if they have no default.
- Addresses are not shared between accounts or contacts. There is no way to copy an entry from one contact to another.
- Nothing is validated beyond the required fields for the country. There is no lookup, correction or duplicate detection, so two identical entries are both valid.
Where the data lives
Each entry is an Address record (s_c__Address__c). The Contact field links it to the contact who owns it, and the Account field to their account. The Is Default Shipping and Is Default Billing checkboxes mark the defaults. The Account field cannot be changed after the record is created, and deleting an account deletes the address records linked to it.
To correct a customer’s address, open the Address record from the Contact record and edit the fields. For example, set Is Default Shipping on the entry the customer wants their orders sent to. Deleting a record in Salesforce does not set a replacement default, as described in the note above.
