Saved payment methods
On this page
If you use the Stripe, Stripe ACH, or Square payment provider, customers can save their payment details during checkout and reuse them for future purchases without re-entering them. Each saved payment method also appears in Salesforce as a Payment Method record (without the full card or account number), so you can see what your customers have on file.
Before you begin
Saved payment methods are only available with the Stripe, Stripe ACH, and Square payment providers. Your store must have one of these set up as a payment provider. See payment providers.
With Stripe ACH, the saved payment method is the customer’s US bank account rather than a card. It shows the bank name, account type, and last four digits of the account, with no card brand or expiry date.
Customers must have a store account and be signed in to reuse a saved payment method at checkout.
How customers save a payment method at checkout
On the checkout payment step, customers see a Save this payment method for future transactions checkbox below the payment form. When they check it and complete their purchase, the payment method is saved along with the payment:
- The payment provider stores the card or bank account securely and returns a reusable token.
- StoreConnect creates a Payment Method record linked to the customer’s contact. The record holds the token and display details: the card brand, last four digits, and expiry date for a card, or the bank name, account type, and last four digits for a bank account.
The first payment method a customer saves becomes their default payment method.
:::warning The full card or account number is never stored in StoreConnect or Salesforce. The payment provider holds the payment details; StoreConnect keeps only the provider’s token and the display details shown to the customer. :::
Paying with a saved payment method
When a signed-in customer with a saved payment method reaches the checkout payment step, StoreConnect offers their default first, for example “Use your saved default Visa ending in 4242”, with a single button to complete the purchase.
From there the customer can also:
- Choose one of their other saved payment methods, if they have more than one
- Select Use a different payment method to pay with a new card or another payment option instead
If the customer saves the same card or bank account again, StoreConnect recognizes it and reuses the existing Payment Method record rather than creating a duplicate.
Managing saved payment methods
Customers manage their saved payment methods from the Payment Methods section of their store account, where they can:
- Add Payment Method — save a new payment method without making a purchase
- Set Default — choose which saved payment method is offered first at checkout
- Remove — delete a saved payment method they no longer want to use
Viewing saved payment methods in Salesforce
Each saved payment method is a Payment Method (s_c__Payment_Method__c) record related to the customer’s contact. The Type field shows Card or Bank Account. A card record shows the card brand, last four digits, and expiry date. A bank account record shows the bank name, account type, and last four digits. Every record also shows the status, whether it is the customer’s default, and the payment provider it belongs to.
Products that always save the payment method
Some products store the customer’s payment method as part of checkout, for example subscription products, or products whose Payment Capture Type is set to Save Payment Method Only, which saves the payment method without an immediate charge. For carts with these products, StoreConnect saves the payment method automatically and does not show the checkbox.
